Featured Poem: Lucifer’s Side of the Story

Possibly because I spend so much of my time with drama and Theatre things, many of my poems turn out to be mini-dramas.  I have no idea if this makes them good poems or rubbish ones or if it does not matter.    Lucifer’s Side of the Story is one of these; in it Lucifer speaks directly to us.

Lucifer’s name is connected with light; in this poem Lucifer gives us his side of the story of his relationship with God.  The implications are quite clear that Lucifer was God’s lover, until God got bored with him.  So the poem is held together with its exploration of sexuality, attraction, and possibly love.

The seed of the poem is the Christian idea (myth?) of Lucifer and his Fall. You take the seed then, as you can see, run with it.  When you have run with it, you still need to ensure you have a Big Idea to give it meaning,.

Writing

I really must stop writing about food; I have just brushed up a poem called Whim Wham, which is an 18th Century trifle, and another called Jam Doughnut.  Last month I mentioned a poem, Lunch Box inspired by a line in a news broadcast; I have just finished quite a long poem, Not a Say which was inspired by an interview I heard with Hanif Kureishi.  It took ages to get it together; there was a tension between giving it some kind of poetry form against keeping it natural.  And it is intensely personal (which is always difficult.)

I have also been carrying around in my head a satirical idea to do with immigration; I have only just realised I could turn this into a satirical poem, razored humour.  But how seriously do people take humorous poems, indeed, humorous poets?
